Name: Dana G. Cohen, MD
Job (aka, Career/Calling/Inspiration): Integrative Physician, Internist, Educator
Age: 43
Family situation (kids? dating? long-term relationship?): Currently single, living with Betty, my 4-legged BFF, considering adopting a child- with or without a partner.
How do you make sure you feel good every day? I chant “nam myoho renge kyo” for at least 10 minutes twice daily, I walk my dog in central park every morning, and I go to sleep at peace with what I’ve accomplished that day (I actually list my accomplishments in my head when I lay down to sleep- even if the accomplishment was that I ate a really healthy lunch.)
What inspires you to do the work that you do? On a daily basis I am encouraged and inspired by my own patients’ successes. I am so lucky to have them.
How did you muster up the courage/confidence/stamina to create the life you have? I have always been driven and independent and I have a core belief that everything will be okay; I am where I need to be at this moment regardless of how bad the moment may seem. Every day in life is a challenge and I am truly an eternal optimist and I know I will always land on my feet and remain hopeful of future dreams, no matter how large they may be.
What’s your approach to nutrition? How much time do I have? My approach is like everything else I do, it’s all about balance. I do believe in lower glycemic foods and smaller meals more frequently throughout the day in order to balance blood sugar. Eat organic whenever possible and at the very least eat organic eggs and milk. Vary your food choices, and try to eat whole foods, meaning very little processed foods.
How do you stay inspired when difficult challenges arise? I call upon my friends to lean on and vent with. I chant more. I reach out for help and inspiration. I am so fortunate to have surrounded myself with a network of inspiring healers.
What do you do to stay in balance – in other words, how do you balance things like your career, your well-being, your happiness, your friends, your children, your spouse, dating, your fitness, your nutrition, your hobbies, etc.? I make time for things important to me. I also set time aside for something creative; I recently took a 10-week improv comedy class. I don’t beat myself up when I’m not perfect. I sometimes take “A Day Away” which my heroine Maya Angelou describes in a poem by the same name.
What’s your ultimate indulgence – just for you? Coffee Haagen Dazs
What advice do you have for women/men aiming to have it all? In other words, what do you do or have you done that works for you? All Clichés but they are heartfelt…Experience is key, find a mentor, stay focused, disciplined and work hard. There are no shortcuts. Do what you love and if you’re honest and have integrity you can accomplish anything!
Any other thoughts? Balance is key to everything and is especially important in what I do as a physician. When one thing is out of balance in the body, the whole body is affected and it is important to look at everything. A good example is with hormones, you can’t look at one and not look at the all: sex hormones, thyroid, adrenals, and insulin. They affect each other and when you are balanced you will feel terrific!

Dr. Cohen’s unique approach is certainly refreshing. As a professional she clearly demonstrates that conventional and alternative medicine can work in unison. Thanks so much for the inspiring and very interesting read.
Dr. Cohen is amazing. I am overwhelmed with a sense of calm when I enter her office; I leave feeling everything will be OK. I like that almost any ailment I’ve ever had, was treated by eliminating or incorporating certain foods in my diet as well as taking supplements. Dr. Cohen won’t just hand you a bunch of Rx’s or load you up on anti-biotics when chances are they are not even necessary. I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Cohen for everyone–men, women, and children.
