Back To School: Nutrient Filled SNACKS
by Susan Cross | Posted: September 3rd, 2010 | No Comments »
I can’t believe it is September already. Many of you will be getting your children ready for school. When doing so we usually remember notebooks, shoes, fresh pencils and new backbpacks. Well September is also a great time to prepare yourself and your kids for health!
Those long school days and heavy backpacks mean they need nutrient filled fuel and so do YOU!
This month we are reinstating our commitment to ourselves and our families’ health. In my next post I’ll share some healthy lunch choices for you and your kids, and I’ll also share some great supplements that you can begin now, as preventative measures for a healthy winter.
Let’s get started on portable snacks: Fill up their backpacks, your own tote, the office drawer, the car, you get the idea. Don’t be without your snacks.
The snacks on this list are all organic, nutrient-rich, and taste delicious. They provide energy that will keep your blood sugar balanced and keep you from overeating when meal time finally rolls around.
ORGAIN CHOCOLATE PROTEIN MILK:
This is a great substitute for chocolate milk. This is chocolate whey protein and it’s loaded with vitamins. This drink fills them up, sustains them and has the vitamins to get the job done.

JUSTIN’S NUT BUTTER PACKETTES:
I love these portable organic nut butters. They come in individual packettes and I carry them everywhere. We love the honey-almond. There are several choices, so try them all. Squeeze them on toast, in your smoothie or my favorite – on a banana, apple or piece of celery. If you have a nut allergy please try Sunbutter made from sunflower seeds -it’s delicious.
GREEN CHOCOLATE DREAM: ORGANIC SUPERFOOD SNACKS
My new favorite snack! This nutrient rich snack is a powerhouse. It has some of VIB’s favorite superfood ingredients. You will gain a natural boost of energy and swear you’re eating chocolate! This 100% organic, raw-vegan treat has a high ORAC antioxidant rating, supports clarity, memory and alertness. They contain goji berries, raw cacao, maca root, chia seeds and reishi mushrooms.

WILD BAR:
The WILDBAR is a 100% organic, raw, whole food, nutrient-rich meal in a bar. Benefits include: increased mental and physical energy, heightened clarity and attention, elevated mood due to phenylethylamine, and strengthened immune function. I’m in love with the Mayan Spice flavor and buy them by the case.
AMAZING GRASS ORGANIC GREENS SUPERFOOD CHOCOLATE WHOLE FOOD ENERGY BAR:
Amazing Grass enzyme rich whole food energy bars contain many nutrients the body needs. This green superfood energy bar is so delicious and nourishing. It is 100% organic, raw-vegan, gluten free and packed with antioxidant-rich superfoods and protein.
GOJI BERRIES:
Goji Berries are a complete protein source. Goji’s are a natural energy booster and perhaps the most nutritionally-rich fruit on the planet. Goji Berries contain calcium, B1, B2, B6 E, zinc, iron, copper, calcium, selenium, and phosphorus. Goji’s have one of the highest antioxidant/ORAC rating of any fruit. Please refer to our metabolism boosting superfoods list to learn all the benefits of the Goji. Make a trail mix with gojis, walnuts, sunflower seeds and coconut flakes – delicious!

WHOLE GRAIN CRACKERS WITH A CHEESE STICK:
Place a few whole grain crackers, an organic cheese stick and a few grapes and you have a wonderful snack – carbs, protein and a healthy sweet everyone will like. I like Back To Nature Organic Whole Grain Crackers. If you are gluten-free try Mary’s Gone Crackers -they’re really good.
BABY CARROTS:
I love the little organic packs of carrots, these are great to have on hand. Apple slices or apple sauce cups are also great.
So these are a few, very portable items you can take anywhere, tune in next week for nutritious lunch ideas. Enjoy!
The snacks in my bag have been a life saver. I find myself with low energy when my "last" fuel dwindles, and the snack tides me over til the next meal. And when I get to the next meal, it's likely I make healthy choices. If I don't have the snack, I grab for anything. Does that sound familiar? Goji berries with nuts - my fave that Susan turned me on to!
