What Does Back to School Mean to You? New, Old-School Resolutions!

by Karen Elizaga | Posted: September 8th, 2010 | No Comments »

Remember all those September morns when you readied your fresh new school supplies (that you were not to touch!), admired your shiny, unscuffed shoes and unworn fashions, and wondered whether your new teacher would be strict or easy? Back-to-school Septembers were so full of emotion for many of us that the post-Labor Day week still brings up a lot of stuff for us.

As I watch my daughter, Sloane, stack and restack her school supplies, I think about what her school year will bring, and I definitely feel her excitement! But I also think about what sort of things I’m going to do for myself in this “new” year. September is time to wake up from our August slumber!

What sorts of things are you going to commit to do this school year? How about those old school promises we made to ourselves when we were little? They still apply now!

  • Do your homework on time - no more waiting til the last minute to get stuff done!
  • Take the classes that you want to take - do the stuff that really interests you and that you love. No more doing stuff just to do, or because you’re supposed to. Is your job really what you want to be doing right now?
  • Be proactive about talking to your teachers – look around and see who your teachers can be. They could be your own kids, your neighbor (whether at home or at work) or a long-time friend. Or even take a class that you have been meaning to take!
  • Play nice with the other kids – say the things that support your friends and/or colleagues, but also say the more difficult things which will help your relationship in the long-run.
  • Participate in extra-curricular activities – get yourself moving and really enjoying your life. Find activities and friends that will give you pure fun and joy!

Have a great school year!

The school year does bring up a lot. So true, thanks Karen. I am happy for my son and wishing him an exciting year - but selfishly I am so darn happy to be getting time alone I can hardly wait. I will use the time wisely - hope you all do too. Happy back to school kids!
